So, After much planning and many schedule conflicts, I finally had the honor of fishing with tluedeke. Got to the lake about 4pm, and after launching the pontoons, went out a little ways and started catching spinyray. I caught bluegill at first, then tluedeke showed us how to catch nice perch, and it was steady fishing till near dark. It's always more fun to fish with intelligent, polite people, like Jiggy and tluedeke, among others, unless of course you need to hide that special fishing hole! Anyway, we ended up with quite a few keeper perch and bluegill, some small sunfish and crappie (only 2 crappie this time), and about a dozen bass worthy of the name (and several in the minnow class). The bass were up to 17 or 18 inches (wouldn't hold still), but mostly around 10-12". At one point I had the rapt attention of 5 raptors moving their heads in concert with the bass that was circling the pontoon. Looked like they were watching an odd tennis match or race.
Tluedeke is a real fisherman. Definition: Someone who can focus entirely on what he is pursuing, and sticks with it. He found a good spot for Bluegill, with one real nice one and several keeper sized ones, and never saw me going in circles being pulled by a bass, holding it up, yelling (there was road noise and distance), and waving the fish. Hyperfocus is part of fishing. A big part. Also my pitch for this excursion was "it's the worst possible conditions for catching fish in these ponds. Wanna go?" "Sure!"
The other part I loved was that I tried out 6 new lure creations, and 5 of 6 caught fish. I'd have been happy with one! And the icing on the cake was they caught the species they were designed for. Overall a 4, good time, but the fish required some real attention, or reel attention, to convince. Talked to a trio fishing near the launch area who'd been there as long as we had, and they had 1 trout and 1 bluegill.
