Beautiful morning. An overcast that developed into scattered clouds later in the day. The water at 8 am was smooth as glass. There were only two other boat trailers at the launch site and we had the place to ourselves.I put my 17' bass boat in the water and headed across the lake to find some rocky drop-offs. A couple of fellows were trolling towards the center of the lake. There was nothing else on the water to disturb the peaceful scene. We were after smallies, not trout. My son tried top water fly fishing because there was a rise of some sort and the fish were jumping around us. I stuck to diving plugs and plastics and worked the submerged breaks along the shore line. I immediately got a small shaker on and tossed him back. Within a few minutes another smallmouth a little larger.
By now my son switched to plastic grubs and had one on. The action was good for the next hour- the largest went perhaps 1 1/2 lbs. and then like a light switch it turned off. We tried everything, top water, deep running plugs, and hopping plastic on the bottom to no avail. We moved over to the small island and got a couple of fresh strikes, but they were hitting short, more out of curiosity than feeding. By noon we called it a day. I did see a nice rainbow taken from a private float. They were bait fishing from the looks of it.

I've had better fishing days, but any day spent fishing with a son is a good day.
