Great day at Blue Lake. My daughter and I went fishing for father's day week-end. The smallmouth pictured was one of many bass we caught over the week-end and it weighed 3 lbs. what a fight it put up. When we netted it, it upchucked a rainbow trout fry about 4". When we went back to shore, I talked with Jeff at Blue Lake Resort and he said the state had recently stocked the lake with fingerlings. I told Jeff that I was going to e-mail the state fisheries to let them know that the bass are going to wipe out all these fry, Jeff said the state fisheries knows that. What a waste of our license fees. In years past, the state has killed all the fish in Blue Lake to get rid of the spiny rays (which also kills the trout) then they restock the lake with trout. I have heard that residents of Blue Lake will catch bass in other lakes and bring release them in Blue Lake because they want bass in the lake to catch. Well, if you want to catch some bass, go to Blue Lake. Most of the bass we caught were on the south end of the lake near Blue Lake Resort in the shallows.
We used black grubs with shiny specks.

Hey dgsmith,
Whats the best way to catch bass there in Blue lake. We fish it every year for trout and I always put a little time trying for bass with no luck. We would normally be there earlier near Memorial day if that makes a difference. We also stay down on the south end so I know that area.

Going north from Blue Lake Resort, go past the rock island and head to the right side of the lake. We fished the shallows where the bass are nesting. The bass should be there from late May and into June. Since the bass are on nests, I always catch & release. We were using black grubs that had sparkles on them. Good luck.

My folks own a place on blue. Looks like the word is getting out about the great small mouth fishing. The best lures to use are a Zara spook or floating jointed rapala if you want explosive action. Park lake is great too. Shallow rocky flats is the key.
