Took my son up to fish Walupt for his first time. I had not been to the lake since I was a kid living in Morton and had vague memories of tough fishing with not much luck. Got to the lake in the morning after a very long dusty drive and got the boat launched and ready for three days of fishing.

Realized quickly that allowing motors on the lake makes a huge difference (10 mph limit)! Trolled pop gear and wedding rings, dick nites, and flatfish. Had luck on everything. Even had some bites on various wet and dry flies, mostly over in the shallows at the southwest corner. Did not see anybody fishing with bait which was good. Even my son did not lose many fish on the barbless hooks.

Had to rescue a guy on a float that got blown to the east end of the lake. Note to people, don't go to that end if you don't have power to get back as the wind is steady.

Largest fish was about 13" caught on a flatfish the last day. All those we kept were good eating. This is one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever fish with clear water and amazing scenery. Worth the long drive.

That is awesome that you did as well as you did. I fish/hunt out of my cabin in Packwood and have been to Walupt many times with limited success. The alpine fish up there can sometimes be pretty picky so I was kind of surprised they hit on everything like that. Congrats on going up there. One of the prettiest lakes in that are I think and not much pressure. Nice job.

The date is accurate, just finally got around to posting.

Yes, the success was awesome and surprising, we did not expect to do so well. All three days of fishing were like that. Even the guy fly fishing from shore was doing ok. I think we will try to go back up next year and give it another run. The one thing we did not have much luck on was casting spinners. Maybe a couple hits, but that's it. Kaptain King -> When you fished Walupt, were you in a boat?

I was in a float tube once and from the bank with waders twice. The float tube was the most productive but when I used it a couple of years ago, it was a year where there was a lot of snow. I think the lake might have been a little cold since it was early. I really want to take my new kayak up there - especially after your good report. Week after next I am going to be up there but I am going to hit up the creeks. I am going to hit Skate Creek further up for some holdover rainbows and then venture up to Summit Creek/Soda Springs for some brookies. I am thinking August is when I will get back to Walupt. If you go before then, let me know how you do.
