I was lucky enough to fish with Dick Thaden with son-in-law Dave Trip and Dick's grandson, Josh Tripp. Josh just graduated and had this hiatus before starting his new job to fish with his dad and grandfather. What a treat! I've had this three generation group for a number of years now. It is one of the bonuses of being a fishing guide! I knew I had a great bite going on Colyar ledge so we went right to it. We pounded the Mack's Lures Squid rigs off the downriggers and pulled Silver Horde's Kingfisher Lite spoons off the poor man's outriggers. Early, we hit fish from 235 to 345. Later in the morning, the bite was mostly from 284 to 365. We had the bites for a record day, but my newfound enthusiasm for stingers was misplaced as we still had a number of short strikes and pull-offs, but boy oh boy was the bite rate hot early in the morning. It eventually slowed down, but it still a fantastic day.
Jeff took the Plugrath group out. He tried for Kokanee early, but they were elusive and he had only a couple of bites to show for his efforts. Then, a big hook up after a battle on Kokanee gear what appeared to be a lake record kokanee was right at the net, but no, not a kokanee. Another one of those elusive Lake Chelan landlocked Chinook came to the net! Then Jeff went to pounding Colyar ledge too and got the gang a really nice pile of Mackinaw!
Jeff had good luck running big single Siwash hooks off the back end of the T4 and U20 flatfish. It resulted in a better hook up percentage and less dredging of bottom debris.
Watch out for the floating debris now. The hot weather has really started filling the lake with snow melt ...and... big woody debris.
