Rough out today, lots of wind which made boat control and line control difficult at times. Made 2 laps around this lake hitting various types of emergent and submergent cover. The fish seem to be staging on transition banks right now as the water is still only 44-45*. I caught one and lost one on a carolina rig in 12' of water where the bottom breaks from shallower to deeper water. Also tried lipless cranks, suspending jerkbaits, Jika rigged plastics and jigs from depths of 6 inches to 10 feet with no takers.

The wind started kicking up even more so I bailed out. I would say this weekend should start producing the greenies!

Used the newspaper trick so the negative nancies can go ahead and stop before they start :)

However that meant I didn't want to take the time to weigh the fish too so I would guess 3.2-3.5lbs.

Tight lines!

Nice report sir and nice bass too! What's the newspaper trick all about? For size, fish health or they just like the sports page?

The newspaper is worse than any vinyl seat. Newspaper will wick the water and slime off the fish, NEVER use newspaper.

Nice fish, now go catch some more.

I think he is trying to show the date on the newspaper. To prove it was today.

swayner23: Maybe things have changed on here, I don't know but in the past people have been flamed for early west side largemouth reports with no pics or a pic that had an improper date stamp. Only in the early season does it matter but the newspaper provides indisputable proof of date caught. Silly yes, but it beats the chorus of boo birds that can lurk on these sites.

Amx: If you look, only a small bit of the fishes tail touched the paper. I tried not to let him touch at all but it's hard not to and take the photo at the same time. That being said, I do eat bass, both largemouth and smallmouth, so before anyone gets too twisted for it barely touching the paper....consider the alternative ;)

Oh, the date. lol. Great idea, maybe I should try that, except I don't read newspapers anymore, too much effort. HaHaHa.

Nuttin wrong with eating a Bass now and then.

...and some lakes have too many Bass, and there are too many stunted fish, so eating a full limit now and then is the best for those lakes..

Amx: Agreed! I don't read the paper either, just needed it for the early seaon pic. Will no longer be neccessary...

8theB8, you just can't win... Next time lay the fish down on top of your tablet or cell phone open to the current date. Slime your cell phone. :-)
P.S., I'm sure the fish will survive. These bass are like Sherman tanks. Nice fish!

No kidding Mike! Ha Ha. I don't have a problem with someone being protective over a bass, I used to be the same way. The negativity doesn't bother me as much as it used to... Going to try to make a return to the site this year, I got a few people started bass fishing over the off season and really enjoyed sharing the info with them! After all, what's the point of taking what you've learned to the grave? Knowledge gained should be knowledge shared!

I enjoyed your video on Eloika Lake btw, I will be over there on vacation next month and plan on making a visit!

ya, Eloika was a great day. I like that, "what's the point of taking what you've learned to the grave?'. Good motto there.

Just to clarify...that fish was released. I know they taste better from colder water but I don't typically keep anything pre-spawn and I prefer smallmouth, yum!
