Went to I-82 Pond #6 in an attempt to hit the pre-spawn crappie and perch. Marked a lot of fish, particularly on the south side of the island and on the east side of the lake. The fish were mostly in 30-35 feet of water, sometimes suspended tightly, other times suspended at various elevations.
But could not get a bite. Tried baited Swedish pimples, ice fishing jigs tipped with worms, straight worms, but nothing worked. Tried various actions (slow, energetic) at various heights above the bottom. Nothing broke the fish lockjaw.
Weather was brilliant - low 60s, little wind, Mt. Adams clear as day. Great fishing day, bad catching day.
There were tons of people there - everyone was shore fishing for Alpo McTrout (and many were successful).
Guess I'll have to wait for the water to warm up more.
Sorry we couldn't get together at Pond 6, but the I-82's usually give me a few early misses, too. The Basin seemed warmer than the local ponds right now. Caught a lot of shakers, but nothing big enough to fillet without a scalpel. Burke was fun, but the spiny ray were hard to entice. Maybe next hit Pond 2 for trout, and check 1 for spiny ray. That narrow shallow area sometimes warms quicker.
Thanks for the report I never could under stand you could get perch and crappie through the ice one day and the next day go to an open lake full fish and not get a bite that's fishing. god bless.
Granted, my electronics are pretty old and don't differentiate between large and small fish (my new modern sonar fishfinding unit will go on my actual boat boat). All those fish I was marking could have been bait fish, for all I know. I almost gave up and fished for dog food trout, but couldn't bring myself to fish for those (vaguely amusing fight, but they taste like the 1" of mud at the lake bottom).
I need to get a thermometer unit, so I can monitor water temps. The more I try to be analytical about it, the more I realize what a ginormous effect that has on fishing.
All that said, it was a gorgeous day to be on the water, and to some extent, I don't particularly care that I didn't catch anything. Less fish to clean. :-)
So, fishinChristian, what is the story about Ponds #1 and #2 (or for that matter, Ponds #3-4, and #7)? I've only fished #5 and #6. What is the spiny ray fishery like in those other ponds? Based upon my experience, #5 and #6 seem to be quite solid for perch, crappie, and bluegill of decent size.
