Fished the South Point/Cedar River area. Marked a lot of fish high in the water column, but just couldn't get any fish to bite after fishing just about the whole tackle box. Decided to change up tactics and start fishing deep on the bottom. Herring stripped a #2 Needlefish, Brass/Red Head pattern and deployed the lured to the deck in about 90' of water when bam, something hammer my lure. The 15" Cutty came up all the from the bottom to the surface and battle hard, from a long way out, all the way to the boat. One bite, one fish day. It was my first day out with 10# braid spooled up on the reel with 30' of 10# mono top shot as several anglers on this site have recommended, thank you. Game changer for sure!

Hi Homewaters nice fish - We use fluorocarbon 8# for the leader. It makes a difference when fishing in the top 25'. Don't know what happens when you are deep.

Hey downriggeral! Thanks for the tip, I always appreciate new pointers/tricks from fellow anglers! I have been using flurocarbon for the actual leaders, but I see how a fluro top shot could even be better than mono. It's a good problem solving exercise tweaking your gear to accommodate different fisheries. Thanks again and good luck on the water!
