I haven't been here recently but used to fish Mayfield a lot for tiger muskies. These fish are difficult to catch and PLEASE release them. Cast shorelines, sunken stumps, and shallow weed beds, staying in the warm top layer of water that is six feet or so deep. Forget weekends, best time is mid-week in early morning and evening. Mayfield tigers don't like large baits or bright colors. Go with small bucktails and plugs in black, red, and silver-black. A #5 Mepps is a good size. You can get these, wire leaders, and other muskie gear by mail from Rollie and Helen's Musky Shop in Wisconsin, they are on the internet, but most of their lures are too big for Mayfield. They have bony mouths so hooks must be kept super sharp. Start reeling in bucktails the instant they hit the water; the strikes usually come right away. Watch for follows and do several figure-eights at the boat; even if Mr. Tiger is too deep for you to see him, the figure-eight can turn a follow into a hit.!
You will need a needle-nosed pliers or vise-grip to extract the hooks. To release a tiger muskie, place him in the water with one hand under the belly to support him upright, with the other hand grasp him just forward of the tail and swim him back and forth to move water through his gills, until he swims away. These fish are tremendous fun but you will work extremely hard to catch one and it may take numerous trips to the lake.
