Arrived at 7:30am. Lake is snow covered, about 3 inches, ice is about 6 inches. We went about 300 yards north of Jerry's Landing. We drilled about 10 holes and fished them all. Caught fish out of most of them. My guest, mother inlaw caught a Large Mouth about 15" long, he went back for another day. We took home 13 perch the largest 8 1/2 ". The bite was slow but steady. I used my new Vexilar and I am happy. I did catch fish that I would have missed had I fished without the Vexilar. I hooked fish 3 feet or more from the bottom. An interesting note - I started fishing with artificial bait, Berkley Gulp. My mother inlaw used maggots. I had caught somewhere around 10 fish to her none. She did have bites but no hook ups. She then tried the Gulp and almost immediately caught a fish. Her large Large Mouth was caught with the Berkley Gulp. Last year nearly everything caught was caught with maggots. Also last year there were days where I would catch 60-80 perch with most of them being 3-5 inches. This year, 2 trips, I have caught only a half dozen or so of smaller fish. Nearly everything that I have caught has been of a keeper size. I do not know which is better a lot of fish or fewer larger fish. I think that I will keep using the Berkley Gulp.

Safe ice on Eloika?? Happy day!!

Did you guys move around, or pretty much focus on the area north of Jerry's? Was the ice consistently think or did some of the holes show variability? And did you get out into that area towards the middle with the 20 ft trench?

Thanks in advance for any reply!! And congrats!

Berkley Gulp rocks bro! It's one of my favorite go too ice baits, esp the white Gulp wigglers on a micro jig for bigger perch. Great report and enjoy your fish fry! Jiggy

To answer your questions - 1. We stayed put. That is we stayed within a 30 foot circle. 2. I felt that the ice was uniform in thickness, no thinning. I would like to fish that deep trench some time. I think that there may be a good supply of fish.

With the coming 5 cold day / nights there should be no questionable ice I would think. I would bet that out from Crappie point should prove to be fruitful. I live very close, think I'll head over Thursday afternoon.
