My lady friend and I tried to connect with fish Friday at Rufus Woods at Chief Joe but nothing shakin there, but a different drive for both of us at Grand Coulee. A enjoyable day sight-seeing and fishing. We then got out on the bank fishing at Banks lake Saturday, and the solace and solitude was interrupted by a couple of fish on the stringer. A nice local triploid, and a possible steelhead or Redband tested my tackle. I think it was two fish in two hours, which was a decent bright, sunny afternoons worth of fishing. I keep my drag light, but needed to crank it down to slow these fish. I would recommend at least 8 lb. test on these bull-dogs, with a good partner on the long handled net. (Thank You, GF!) These fish are strong, and don't seem to realize that their hooked till thy see the bank, and then will give you a run for the money. They don't like seeing a net coming their direction either, and will make some long sprints. These fish are big and strong enough to bust 8 lb. test, so I try to give them a little time coming to the bank. We found that both fish were chock full of baby Walleye, and had no need to eat anything, or, they are trying to build their resrves for Winter. Totally fat with food. We used crawlers marshmallows and caught fish at 10 feet to 30 ft. from the bank. (estimate). A lot of fun to catch!

Thinking about going out there soon. Love the area. But, I think fishinChristian was asking where on the lake, not how far out or deep. I would like to know as well. Thanks

We have done it all. From trolling to jigging from a boat. The vague area in the lake is the variation in water filling or leaving the lake. Like Roosevelt, the water height fluctuates, sometimes daily. I have had luck at the canal at the North end of the lake, the docks at the marinas, etc. While boating I found unbelievable amount of what I would guess to be Kokanee on the other side of Steamboat although they were only at twenty feet, they would not bite. It boils down to time on the water. The fish I have caught are hit and miss between long periods of sitting. Boating has a lot better chance than anywhere. I was told by reliable sources that these fish are so full of heavy spawn (baby fish) this year, they're simply not hungry. There is a lot more action at the pens of course. What is kind of exciting is the variety of fish in the lake. I feel that this time of year, 10 feet of water or better is good as long as it hasn't been bothered that day. I think we're just in a lucky place for that particular fish . We mix it up with crawlers and shrimp from bank on slip sinkers with about three feet of leader. I hope that helps.

PS- My dog decided she likes marshmallows with hooks in them, so be aware. She got lucky, and the #6 hook came out of her tongue without problems

I would love to hear from someone who has the Kokanee or Walleye dialed in right now in Banks.

Thanks for the report. I would love to hit banks right now. Last time I was over there was in september and the water level was low. I usually don't head over there to fish till March. My folks own property in the coulee city area so I go over a lot during the spring, summer and fall months. I just hate the thought of driving over the pass in the snow. Not a fan of that so thats what keeps me from going I think. Nice bows! I wonder if banks will freeze over this year.

As an owner of Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic if your hook doesn't come out of your dogs mouth they could take good care of ya! Been thinking about hitting Banks one of these weeks. Haven't been having to good of luck on Rufus and Banks is closer for me anyways.
