Saturday (opening day) I went to Deer with my cousin Mike and friend Blair.
Anticipation was high because last year fishing Deer Lake was a "slam dunk" on opening day.
When we arrived about 0830 there was the usual opening day crowd of about
a dozen and a half boats most of which were off the water by 1030. The water
temperature was 53 degrees with a lot of fish jumping and splashing.
In the past we had done really well trolling orange powerbait or pitching
gold Kastmasters. This year was no different except we caught fewer fish.
We did not even get a boat limit which is really rare. We ended the day with six fish and were off the
water about 1230.
Sunday was just a repeat of Saturday. This time I went with my friend Barry and two
of his youngest daughters. We did not hit the water until about 3 pm.
Nothing changed from the day before, lots of fish jumping and splashing
but very few on our hooks. Water temp still 53 degrees. We took five fish
home.
Hopefully, the nice weather this week will spark the bite on Deer by
raising the water temperature a few degrees.
