Had a good feeling about today. High pressure front over us and the Weather Channel fishing forecast was in the “excellent” range. So, off to American Lake. Gate opened at 0645, on the water at 0710 and took a cruise around the southwest side of Silcox. Didn’t find any kokes there, so headed over in front of the VA buildings with 39 feet of wire down in 70 feet of water. Trolled through the same area where I caught a 17” last week. After a few passes and no bites, I was deciding where to go next when the clip popped. After several power runs and wrapping himself around my second line, I managed to pull him and the line to the net just as the hook popped out of his mouth. Too late, he was in the boat - my new personal best for American – 18”, 2.0 lb.
I couldn’t get his tail to lay down for the picture after being bent up in the cooler all morning. As you can tell from the pix they are turning and he lost his scales. After 0840, the only catches were bows and perch. The “excellent” forecast is good through Wednesday then a low is coming in.
When deciding what setup to start with, I remembered seeing what Toni used at Clear Lake the other day to limit in an hour. Well, it worked!! Thank you, Toni. I used two herring-scented corn on the top hook and one corn with a Berkley mag on the trailer hook.
