My wife, Boni, and I had spent two days in Spokane visiting with family and friends. Before we had left home I had tossed into our car, my tackle bag and my favorite spinning rod and reel, thinking I just might be able to squeeze in a couple of hours at Dog Lake on the way home. I had read some interesting reports on the lake, and although I had gone by the lake, literally dozens of times, had never fished it.
We arrived at the lake at 11:00AM, weather was bright and sunny. Water at shoreline, about 5' deep, was 64 degrees. I put on my hottest presentation, chartreuse Power Eggs and cast out, very near to the boat launch at the FS Campground. After an hour with no action, I changed to pink Power Eggs, cast out, and within 10 minutes had my first fish, a 12" Rainbow. Re-cast, and another 10 minutes landed the second Rainbow, of 11 1/2". The next half hour produced a couple of bites, one in which the fish jumped fully out of the water, 150' out and threw the hook. About 10 minutes 'til 1:00, I caught my final Rainbow, a very fat 16 1/2". With three beautiful fish for Sunday dinner, we left the lake at 1:00PM... three fish in two hours... actually, three fish in one hour after I hit the right color bait.
The secret is to use a long leader (7' to 9') to float the bait above the thick mat of aquatic vegetation of the lake bottom. I also place a couple of EZ eggs above the hook for extra flotation.
Saw quite a few boats on the water as well as a fair amount of fishermen/women on the shore. Saw only one fish landed by a boat out front, but did see a 20"+ Rainbow that a young girl was toting about... her first Rainbow Trout!
A wonderful end to a week of vacation, visiting family and capping it all off with special memories at Dog Lake. PTL!
