Is it any surprise that the week before the Cutthroat derby, I would have my best day of the year on Lake Washington? I started around 10:00am dragging a Brad’s Mini Cutplug and targeting the drop-offs along the eastside of the lake. After an hour of no action I switched to a flasher and hoochie setup and employed winter blackmouth tactics, keeping my gear as close to the bottom as possible without fouling the gear. This paid off in spades as I brought 5 fish to the boat and had a takedown that didn’t stick over the next couple of hours. I released all fish to hopefully be caught by a derby entrant this coming Saturday. I had three nice sized fish to go along with a barely legal and one 16”er. The surface temps were in the upper 50’s and the winds were out of the SW for most of the time I was on the water. A quick check of the barometric pressure chart for the past 24 hours showed a fairly steady barometer which I believed contributed to the spectacular bite I experienced. I apologize for the pictures, again they are stills from video that I took during this outing and I’m still trying to refine the setup and process. I’ll plug the derby once more, which is open to the general public, on the 16th of June. Details can be found at: http://psalakewashington.org

Do your downrigger weights, shaped and painted to look like fish?

Yes, those are 10lb fish shaped weights and they are painted in rainbow trout colors/patterns. Purely for fun, I really don't think it helps, especially when the lure is 100 or more feet back of the clip.

G-man, you are obviously the man to ask this question to, I seem to recall some of your posts from last year talking about size limits during certain periods of the year for kokanee on lake washington. I checked the regs and unless I'm getting this wrong, it looked to me like kokanee under 15 inches were legal year round. I thought I saw some of your posts talking about a 12-14 inch slot limit in the past.

Kokanee under 15" fall under trout regulations in Lake Washington. From March 1st through June 30th there is a 12" minimum size restriction in place for all "trout", hence the 12" - 15" slot limit. Not to worry, come July 1st you can keep kokes as long as they are under 15" long. Just be careful out there, the sockeye are already in the lake and just taking them out of the water for any reason can earn you a fat ticket.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it. What's your preferred way to release sockeye? Rubberized net? Use a dehooker and never net the fish at all?

Usually just putting heavy pressure on the the small hooks that I use will pop them out once the fish is near the boat. If that doesn't do it, then the fish is hooked solid and can be yarded to the boat where the foreceps can do the job without having to remove the fish from the water.
