Got to lake around 11:15. First wave of trout chasers started to leave. All looked like they had great luck. I went out with my wife, Shelly and our 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter. They sat through 5 hours of fishing with better patience than most adults. So proud!

We targeted trout today and landed 4 rainbows between 13 and 15 inches. All were fat. And while we were still fishing, I discovered something I didn't know about Lake McMurray...there are some slab crappie in there! Got one at about 14.5 inches and just about a pound. Took home the two biggest slabs and left the little ones in to get bigger.

This lake just keeps on surprising me. LMB, Kokanee, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, cutthroat, rainbows and crappie. Good species spread for its size, I think.

Cheers!

Howdy, Jon!

Once...on complete accident. I caught him up high near the cove across from the private club pier. #6 Panther Martin gold blade if I recall correctly. Damned lure barely hit the water when Mr. Koke hit it. At first, I thought he was the most voracious 10 inch bow I had ever seen. Turns out he was a blueback. This is twice this lake surprised me. I've spoken to locals who swear they are in there. Say the same of crappie. Most folks dismiss it...until some silly guy like me stumbles into one.

Cheers to you, good sir!

He Mr. DocFish, if you don't mind me asking, what did you catch the crappie on? By reading sounds like you had a pretty good day on the lake!

Howdy, Roderick!

Not at all. Slip float set to about 3 feet above the thermocline-about 18 feet. Small circle hook and a third of a crawler. Helps keep the tiniest fish from being subject to a hook set that could kill 'em. I tend to shoot for the moon when I set hooks. I do what I can to keep from killing fish I don't intend to keep. The crappie seem to run mostly smallish-around 8 to 10 inches, so I self impose the 10 to 11 inch rule for keeping them.

Good luck and cheers!
