Well, the Quinalt derby was today and it was tough fishing with the rain yesterday and the water temp. being colder due to snowmelt from that rain. Water level was up higher then last week, took from 6:30a.m. 'till1:35p.m.to catch 6 fish, one cut was 14 3/4 which was enough to place 5th on cuts, winning cut was only 15 1/4, a half inch that might as well been a foot.Rest were above average fish except one small one that was eye hooked. Oh, well, a fish for Hamza(our dog) who I didn't take as I didn''t think I could manage him in the canoe with everything else.I won a berkely scale for weighing the next monster. Local folks put this derby on this year as the local Lions club, the usual sponsers, had not been able to put it on so local people put it together, hats off to them to due so much with limited resources. All participating kids won a prize and the winning kids fish took home a mountain bike. We plan on guilting some local Tackle manufaturing and retail stores for prizes next year, I'll be donating one of my framed local wildlife shots as well. This derby, which relies so much on the local people, is much too special to not continue. I caught two dollies, none big enough for the two Dolly prizes. One winner and a more then a few dinners.Melanie , alas , was not able to attend as she was attending a work conference. I missed her company and netting skills, hard to play fish, reel up a downrigger up from 30 ft. with 1 ft. per crank, and net the fish!Weather was a little breezy at the northeast corner, but I concentrated on one area we located last week in the southwest corner in the lee and had one of the best individual stringers with conditions being tough, all on the downrigger with a spoon.Looking forward to next trip, weather has got to improve! Alright Bob,glad to hear you put some fish in the canoe. That is amazing that your 5th place cutt. was only a 1/2" from 1st place. That hurts!
I almost made it over, but things with the family just kept piling up. I'll get out there this summer.

No, a Dolly Varden, one of the few places in WA. you can retain them, it is a tribal fishery (Quinalt) and requires a tribal fishing license(available at Amanda Park Mercantile or Rain forest resort store). Thanks for comments, dog will be speaking to me when I cook up the smallest fish for him.I will be having trout for dinner, I'm saving the larger Dolly vacuum sealed in the freezer for the grill when Melanie returns home next week.
