I returned home to the valley to visit family on this long weekend and got a little bit of fishing in. Saturday night I fished a small, non listed lake on the way to Conconully. This lake has a long history of holding big fish despite it's small size and I was eager to fish it. Minutes into trolling, I hooked and landed a line stripping, rocket of a rainbow around 18 inches and quite fat. Half hour later, I hooked but lost what felt like a bit smaller rainbow. In between, I hooked tons of Crappie. Very few trout active in the lake. Time for rehab.
The next day I fished Blue Lake. Now Blue fishes best at sunrise but I just couldn't find first gear till about 8:000 so I was late to the party. Fishing was tough. It was one of those days where nothing seemed to work consistently. I caught 5 and landed 4 but only 2 of them were on the same fly pattern. A retired couple next to me dialed the fish in for a bit with a fox squirrel nymph the guy tied up in camp but that action slowed down after an hour. Thye had been there since the opener and said some nice bows and browns were showing up but the the lake was hot one day, slow the next. They stated that this day was the toughtest day so far. Patterns tried during my 3 hours of fishing were Bugger (1 fish,) Zug Bug (1 fish, 1 strike), Damsel (3 fish, 5 strikes).
