Fished Lawrence today from about 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the public access area. My partner fished a power bait set up(18" leader)with various colors of power eggs and an earthworm, all smothered in Berkley trout acctractant and worm oil. Not even a nibble..
I fished a nightcrawler under a weighted slip float set at 6',4', and 2' respectively. ....Nuthin'.
During our "skunking", I observed darting "V's" and the occasional boiling of baitfish. Having nothing better to do, I tied on a 3" countdown Rapala, rainbow pattern, and on the third or fourth cast at about 10' to 15' out, hooked into fat-n-fiesty dutchie who, after a five minute battle on my sorely under powered light trout rod, spit the trebles when I failed to lower the rod tip on one of her many jumps.
The importance of keeping an upward pressure became evident as I watched her dig her nose into the gravel, loosening the hooks, which resulted in aforementioned hook spitting.
My partner estimated her at about 6lbs., but I'm inclined to believe she weighed about 4lbs. and some change. Either way she was absolutely beautiful, and she was a mightily big fish. And even though I didn't land her, I'm honored to have had her attention for that brief period of time.
Lawrence seems grow some extremely large browns, so I'll ask all of ya to keep very few if any at all. I'm inclined to believe the next state record dutchie just might come out of this lake in the not so far future.
