Well, my kid who has the absolute worse luck ever when it comes to fishing was over for a visit. I got off work and asked him if he wanted to go fishing. He said sure. So we headed to Spanaway Lake. We put in a little before 5:00 and ran just a tad south and pulled up.

I wanted to get some spinnerbaits out but forgot the new ones that I just bought, well, all but one that I had already tied on. So I gave him the pole and he started casting. About his 5th cast I looked up and his pole looked heavy. I asked if he had a fish and he, excitedly, answered "Yes".

Now, this kid has only caught one largemouth ever and it was a pound or so. I took him to Banks last year and he caught 10 or 12 smallies with the biggest being like 10". He has caught some plant rainbows. He has never hooked a big fish. He was pretty pumped up.

He, finally, guided his lunker into the net. He was so happy and so was I. Every time we go the fish seem to not bite. I can catch fish 10 days in a row and then I take my kid and we do not have a bite. So, this was cool and unexpected.

We weighed the fish and took two pictures. The fish weighed 4 pounds 15 ounces (every fish I put in the boat weighs something pounds and 15 ounces, it seems). We then took a short video of him releasing it with my water proof camera. Not bad for first attempt.

In my opinion, this is a very funny looking fish, do you agree? Kind of round at the top and skinny, really:)

Fishing can be like that....hours of frustration punctuated by minutes of shear joy. Good on ya for stickin' with it. Hope your son has renewed his faith!
