Sunday on Lake Chelan with Tyler Walker and Big Bass Dez, spring fishing for smallies. Dez had told me to be prepared for some good fishing and he was right, at least for part of the day.

Started off on my first cast, bam caught a nice 3ish smallie on a rattletrap. We were fishing an off-shore rocky area which two weeks from now will be an off-shore underwater hump as they raise the water level on Chelan. Tyler and Dez were tossing a KGM crawfish plastic imitation on a football head jig, and they soon started consistently catching smallies in the 2 ½ to 4 lb range. I switched up and tried some drop-shots, without success.

I eventually switched up to the KGMs as I couldn’t stand watching those two catch all the fish. It was kinda tough, definitely requires a soft touch. I hooked one that jumped out of the water and spit the hook – “Better work on your hook-set Mr. Carey” Dez comments shaking his head. A little while later I had a super aggressive fish chase after my retrieval and hit it, but again, no luck. Meanwhile Dez and Tyler are sight casting to cruising smallmouth and watching as they would come over to look at the crawfish and slurp it up. Unreal!

The bite got tough after 1ish with both Dez and Tyler being the only ones with any level of success. Me, I filmed and enjoyed the ride. It was a great day on the water, despite a bad back which was definitely affecting my day, ouch. We caught about a dozen fish in all. Thanks Tyler and Dez for taking me out. It’s a treat to get a ride on a Phoenix, and see what a real bass boat is like.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I've noticed you fish lipless cranks often to begin your day. Would you say that's your confidence bait?

I would have to say yes on that one, it seems to produce pretty consistently for me.

you bet, working on it right now. I'm hoping the underwater footage turned out well - water clarity was amazing!

Mike, is that lip less crank a sinker or floater? How deep does it run if a sinker?

@Motoboat- Looks like a Cotton Cordell Super Spot. They are all sinkers, and it is up to you at what depth they run. The faster you burn them, the closer to the top they will run. On a consistent retrive, they will run between 4-7' depending on lure weight.

Nice Mike! Lake Chelan was on my bucket list for a long time but I never fished it. I did however catch some nice largemouth at nearby Roses and Wapato.

Had a blast as always fishing with Mike , im just glad that we stayed on fish allday . Its always a little stessful when filming because we never know what the lake is gonna fish like on any giving day . lol All mike says is "Dez i hope you guys can put something on film besides words " , So after that comment it was game on !!!
That was a fun day for sure , thinking back on the day if i could have changed one thing it would have been the pace in which we fished . Both tyler and myself had a tourney on banks lake the day before and drove over too chelan later on that saturday night , needless too stay we were a tad bit tired (Hope we dont look it in the video) ..
Yea we caught a nice amount of fish but we also missed just as many fish in the process . lol
after we got off the lake i looked at tyler and said "dude we were fishing like KVD out there today , supid fast "

Overall not a bad day , and i think that the viewers will learn a few tips from the video .. Our goal was to show how we go about targeting "pre~spawning bass " here in the NW , ENJOY THE VID :)
