Finally! Ran a woolly bugger around the mouth of an inlet stream during a rain and hooked a couple of typical mountain cutts of 12"...then, on about my fifth pass, I hooked something substantial that leapt at the hook set, smacking the water hard--this was no anemic little chironomid sipper!--and ran right into my backing. As I closed in on it I noticed another fish following it...perhaps its spawning mate? A few dodges underneath the canoe and it came to the net: a beefy 18" cutthroat wearing spawning colors. Released to catch another day.
