Decided to try my luck at sammamish again for cutthroat. In the last 2 times I have caught one. Today I was trying plugs, needlefish, and spoons hoping to keep the kokanee off but to no avail. It seems that no matter what I tried the kokanee kept getting to them. It was fun catching but I would like something to keep.

On another note, I was talking to a game warden after getting back to the dock. He said they started a hatchery program for kokanee two years ago. From talking with us he said the catching has been alot higher this year. They are hoping in 2-3 years to open it for retention of kokes. That would be good to see.

This is an interesting video made in 2010 on Lake Sammamish kokanee.

The kokes are mostly in the top 10'. If you drop to 15-20', I find you get a better proportion of cutts to kokes.

We should try to get the rule changed now this year. 5 trout limit only 2 may be kokanee.

I was finding the kokes at all levels from 15 down to 40', the last cutt that was caught came from 25' on a needlefish. This day the kokes just seemed to be everywhere and hitting anything tossed in.

By the way steelhead597, the videos were very informative. I went through and watched all they had.

Again guys.... why is there a problem with letting those beautiful Kokanee go? Have fun fishing. That's what it is about. You should understand that with 5 million people in this area and growing.... the pressure is going to keep going up on the fish. Try a little conservation even though you have the right to keep 5 trout. Try taking 2 instead. How many do you need? Sometimes you can feed your ego by the good things you do today rather than maximizing the harvest and limiting the resource. Fishing happens to be great this year.... it isn't always so. Why slam it so that the populations dwindle and we have to struggle just to catch a few? Have fun and put some fish back. Use barbless hooks also..... it helps for the ones you break off or lose.
Thanks!
