My neighbor and I have been talking about fishing together in his Canoe and we finally put that into motion today. When we hit Bitter lake and it was a pretty nice afternoon. I didn't have high expectations but the prospect is always in the back of my mind. The lows haven't been quite as cold so I was hoping to break my personal earlierst bass this year(previously was the first week of April). I layed out 35' of my line after tieing on my drop shot and measured out and marked 25', 30', and 35' with different colored sharpies to act as a depth finder. A few websights show it only gets to 31'deep in one spot and that was accurate. Obviously that's where I was looking for bass.
20 minutes in, I have a jig w/ a tikicraw trailor creeping through what I feel is the strike zone and I felt a soft tug. I set the hook and it sure felt like a big momma. I've never caugt a bass in this water temp (43.8 degrees) but it felt like it was fighting. My heart was beating like crazy. As it got close it looked like a 6 pounder turning for a second... NOPE!!!!! It was a F%$#@&^ sand bag. Jokes on me.
We fished for another 3 hours w/ no bites. Threw verious plastics on a drop shot, jigs (crawled super slow, deadsticking, twitch) tried using a lipless crankbait like you would a spoon (I forgot my spoons). Nada. It was a nice evening though. Got to see how my hours of indoor pitching and flipping practice has payed off into some dead cattails. That was cool, haha.
If anyone is looking for someone to split cost on a boat outting going after bass, PLEASE PM me!!! I really want to catch my first pacific northwest winter bass.
