I have many fishing memories on lake whatcom because I live right across the street from the lake. The first time I went fishing there was a couple days after I moved in and I caught about 30 5 - 10 in. perch in an hour. The lake has gone downhill in the past couple years. Last summer I would go and fish for hours and only catch a few perch and every once in a while a bass or a trout. The biggest bass I have ever caught in whatcom was about 5 lbs and the biggest trout was probably about 2 lbs. Last summer when we had some friends staying at our house they went down to the end of north shore drive and only caught one fish but it was the nicest trout I have ever seen. It was about a 10lb, 30 in. rainbow. When they came back and showed it to me I thought they had pulled a trick on me and gone to the store and bought a fish. But they convinced me that they actually caught that fish in the lake. I have tried everything in this lake and I have had the best luck with worms!
. Lures are the worst thing you could possibly use. I have tried every lure and I usually never catch big fish with them besides a few summers ago when I caught two 5 lb bass with a rapala. I started Fly fishing in the lake last year and I have had the best luck with mosquito's. Never fly fish in the morning or during the day because the lake is always rough then. If you wanna fly fish, do it in late summer and early fall at night when the lake is calm and all the boats are off the water.
