Normally I hit lake and join Santa for some time on the water Christmas Day. This year Christmas was a bit blustery so I waited for some better weather and when I woke up today, it seemed to be calm with just some light mist. I made it onto the lake around 10:30am and headed for the north end of Mercer as the wind had picked up a bit out of the south. I decided to work the bottom in 50’ to 70’ of water and started off using a mini hoochie behind a 4/0 dodger. Five minutes into my troll and the rod starts to do its fish on dance in 60’ of water. By the way the fish is fighting and attempting to hug the bottom, I figured it was a smallie, so I took my time bringing it up, hoping to minimize the air bladder expansion. Unfortunately, that didn’t work well enough as she was floating, belly out of the water, by the time I got her next to the boat. I didn’t have anything to fizz her with so in the boat she went. Good sized fish, 18” and read 4lbs even on the digital scale. Re-rigged and continued trolling with the same setup and had a take down 30 minutes later. I have been working on a side drift-trolling technique and it seemed to have paid off. I managed to “floss” this cutt with only 14” of leader between my dodger and hoochie! Now the wind had picked up and it started to rain fairly steady for the next couple of hours and I kept to the leeward side of the Island. Once the wind died down a bit I switched up my offering to a Brad’s mini cutplug and went to work in the east channel. It wasn’t too long before I managed to “floss” a really nice 20” cutt right on the bottom in 70’ of water. After this fish I called it a day and made it back to the ramp by 2:30pm. The water conditions look pretty good right now. The water is clear and the algae seems to be doing great and starting to clump. Surface temps were in the mid to upper 40’s and there was really no discernible thermocline showing on the sonar. The bait was abundant and the perch look like they haven’t gone real deep yet, I marked a couple of schools in the 60’-70’ range. Happy Holidays everyone!

I fished washington last week targeting perch. I couldnt make them strike. I did troll for cutts a bit but my daughter doesnt like trolling. So we jigged for perch. Only fish caught was a big fat bullhead in 70 feet of water. Looks like you had a decent day fishing. Thanks for posting.

Danm, I have found that the best way to find the perch schools is by trolling. If you don't see them on the fish finder, don't bother trying to jig for them as this time of year they tend to group together tightly and show up as a big mass on the sonar. It can be tough fishing when they are this deep, especially trying to get the boat positioned just right.

Nice report and included pictures. Did any of your fish come from the, what I assume to be a bait ball in the F.F. picture? I watched my cousin and the skipper of a offshore boat in California, fizz some various rock cod to keep alive in the live well. If fizzing is releasing the excessive air from the fish's air bladder.

Motoboat - I'm fairly certain that the mass on the sonar is a group of perch, and I didn't happen to pick up anything near it. Fizzing is just what you mentioned. Bass really seem to have an issue adjusting to depth changes, so if you are going to target them in the deeper waters, you'll need a way to fizz your catch to keep them from floating.

Nice to see some more lake WA. cutt. reports. ------ You open yourself up to a "Flossing" debate when you throw that in your report.... LOL. (sarcasm highly intended) Nice fat cutt.

Well once I figured out how to interpret which way the head of a fish was pointed based on the sonar readings, it was only a matter of time before I figured out how to floss those stubborn cutts and I included the the pics prove it. Because we all know that there is no other explanation as to why a fish could be hooked on the outside of the mouth.

Nice report and fish! ...I'm not very fish finder savvy, so I'm wondering what the line that comes down from the left at at an angle and across the bottom at about 63ft is?

CanoeingIt - that would be my downrigger weight. I had re-rigged my gear and sent it to the bottom just prior to the school of fish showing up on the screen.
