Buddy and I had a decent season on the lake. Crappie got better as the season progressed in to Sept. In Sep the lake was lowered, as usual, for maintenance and shoreline cleanup. Fishing for the big crappie picks up at that time. Big Crappie on LaCamas are 10" to 12". However, had one up to the boat that would have gone about 15" annnd Lost it. Did well this season with Trout Magnet 1/64th jig head and Southern Pro Plastic Baits. We seem to be noticing more and more people hauling out buckets of live Crappie to use for Sturgeon bait. Too bad.

Waste of Crappie. Bait? Rainbow trout make the best bait for sturgeon anyhow.

Hey guys, just an fyi: both Crappie and Rainbow Trout are considered game fish, which are illegal to use as bait. Be careful with posting that where "watchful eyes" might see it! ;-)

For some odd reason me and the buddy are usually checked by WDFW agent(s) once or twice a season. We had a good conversation last year with an agent that shared the following. It is not illegal to use Crappie for Sturgeon, but they have to be dead. He also mentioned that when the fish are taken from the lake they have to be dead when leaving. I called the state office to verify same. Sure enough, you can use Crappie and they do have to be dead. Sorrowful situation and too bad for the fishery. For the record the buddy and I will catch and release several hundred in a season. We don't keep anything. I can only imagine the numbers of Crappie being taken from LaCamas to be used for bait.
