Fished the Big One Winter Chinook Derby on Lake Coeur d' Alene over the weekend with my neigbor. Saturday 4 fish were caught in my boat all about 20" except a 6.70# Chinook that I turned in placing me at 9th place, Sunday was slow with no bites. I beleive their were 11 fish turned in Saturday and 2 on Sunday. The 1st place wieghed in at 14lb, 2nd:11lb 3rd:10lb. All fish caught on helmet and herring(orange). Marked larger fish close to the bottom, so we kept our bait up about 20-30ft off the bottom in 110-150ft depths.

Thanks for the post. any particular area? There are very few posts on this lake and it is a difficult lake to learn. Did you use a dodger with the herring or just an orange herring?

Usually I stay above Carlin Bay in winter, there's a shelf mid lake from Carlin bay extending to Loffs Bay, depths there will range from 120-160ft. If you stay in 120-130ft and fish close to the bottom, within 30ft you can't go wrong. Outside of Neachen Bay and in front of Tubbs Hill in the same depths will show a lot of fish. Fishing either a flasher and mini squid or a helmet and herring will produce, I've had better luck and larger fish hitting the helmet herring(greenglow) with no flasher. Trolling speed ranging from 1.8-2.1mph but 1.9mph seems Ideal for my setup.
