Egg Lake on San Juan Island was stocked with 1000 catchable sized rainbow trout late in March, and as the water warms the fishing has been good. I slowly troll a small black leech or wooley bugger on a floating line and long leader from a float tube or pontoon boat. Chironomids are also a good bet. Days with a light wind rippling the water makes the fish less shy and more responsive to close to the surface presentations.
Several weeks ago I had a shocking encounter at Egg Lake. I have frequently seen a woman fishing from the public float using two rods at the same time. I decided to stop and talk to her about the illegality of using two rods simultaneously. She was very belligerent, asking, "Since when has it been illegal?" I set her straight. She then said she and her husband are commercial crabbers and that all the trout she catches go into the crab traps for bait!
I was astounded and said this was unethical, if not illegal. She said she could do anything she damned well pleased with the fish she caught. I informed the sheriff's office, who sent a deputy to talk to her, but she continues to fish nearly every weekday, taking many trout for CRAB BAIT! I encourage fishermen who see her there (she drives an older light blue Ford pickup) to talk to her, make it known to her she is ruining the fishing for those who do it for sport.
Bass are also starting to be active in the extensive weed beds and lily pad beds around the margins of Egg Lake. Practice catch and release!
