After getting skunked on the river in the morning I grabbed my 8' livingston and my nephew and I headed out to Chain lake in monroe (My favorite lake). My 12 year old nephew had never caught a fish before today. We put in and started trolling Macks orange wedding ring spinners with brass blades and within a minute, fish on! My nephew had caught his first fish- a little dinky smallmouth bass. He then preceded to catch another 7 small to medium bass and one medium bluegill sunfish for a total of 9 fish on his first real day of fishing. I landed a couple smallmouths over 10". We were using very light gear to make the fight more fun. Lots of action. We just trolled along the edge of the lillies just fast enough to get the blades spinning and it works good for me everytime. We kept the four largest, I filleted them and my wife breaded and fryed them up for us. Great day.

Yes, Chain lake has a huge healthy population of smallmouth. They are very aggresive. The water is gin clear and on a glass day with polarized glasses you can see schools of small bass very easily. I have caught fish around the entire lake. It also have a good population of bluegill sunfish. And some rainbow trout that keep eluding me.

There are no small mouth bass in Chain lake. I have fished there since 1980's and they are all large mouth bass in there. But it is a great lake to catch a lot of bass in end of Summer/fall. I usually get 20-50 every time out there and top water is great. Biggest I have seen out of that lake is a 18" and 20" 4lb bass. Most are 10" and under.

FYI take a look at other chain lake reports and you can see photo's of one's I have caught. All largemouth bass in green/black color smallmouths are more bronze color if you look at Lake Goodwin reports you will see the color difference. I have never gotten a smallmouth bass out of chain very few crappie and more bluegill, cutthroat trout and don't recall any perch out of there.

The way I understand to tell the differance beetween smallmouth and largemouth is:

Smallmouth: mouth hinges under the middle of the eye.

Largemouth: mouth hinges well behind the eye.

I have not been fishing very long, maybee they are largemouth. I posted a picture above of what we have been catching.

After looking at more pics I see what you are saying. So I guess I have been catching largemouths all along. I guess I need to go target some smallmouths so I can see the differance in person. What lake would have smallmouth that would be more close to monroe than goodwin?
