Fished Beaver this morning till about 10am and had the whole lake to myself. I C&R'd around a dozen largemouth bass, one 5 pounder ( a somewhat skinny 23 incher), one 2+ pounder, a couple just over a pound, and the rest dinks. Pretty good early bite, with all fish caught around lily pads. The wind kicked up about 9, making it hard to detect bites...so I drifted the worm and picked up a couple more small ones - then left.

The big bass had an old broken-off hook in its upper lip (probably why she looked a little skinny - must not have been eating too well lately). I almost felt guilty catching her. I left the hook in because it looked like it was healing well with scar tissue all around - and why mess up a good thing for the fish. It did make me wonder who had their heart broken when this one got away.....

For future use.....Push the hook through and clip it off at the barb, then remove the hook. If it was healing well, then it won't have an infected wound anyway and it would just give the fish "freedom" of pain

I think we've all caught our share of bass with hooks and/or plastics in their mouths. One 4 lber I caught had a drop shot rig and two feet of trailing line. And I know I've broken off a few because of a weak knot. It just goes with fishing. And it certainly goes without saying, I sure feel good when I get the chance to remove these finds from a fish before releasing them. By the way, very nice bass!!

sounds like you made the right choice, fish are more resiliant than most might think. it ate your bait so it must be getting better.

Nice fishing and report. Your pictures remind me of Wilson Wilson from Tim Allen's show "Home Improvement."
