Went solo to Chelan, looking to prove (or disprove) my dismal results from last week. I decided to change things up from my usual August tactics, just to eliminate possibilities as to why last week was such a bust. And it proved effective. Using the lower-than-usual water levels from this spring to my advantage, I was able to fish some spots that appeared as though they would be good summer haunts. I found fish cruising in spots I wasn't casting to, so I switched targets ... but still no takers. The bass would approach the bait but not eat. So I started going through my bag, until I found what they wanted. I ended up with 21 fish total, probably averaging 1-2 pounds, with several real nice kickers .... from the usual August topwater spot, which seems to produce year in and year out, until the sun just peaks over the horizon. Another legendary summer day on Lake Chelan...hot sun, angry smallmouth, and warm water! I saw a sign today that said something like, it's days like these that make memories to warm your heart in January......
