Been here several times. This morning was different. 1 mile from outlet a large black bear. I managed to scare it off. 1/2 mile later we met again. This time I got a visual on her 2 cubs as well. I gave them some time and consistent noise so I could make that last .5 to the lake. (I felt that I was was making a fair amount of noise the whole time) apparently I was wrong.
This was my first experience seeing bear in the wild. It was unnerving but I will be mentally prepared next time.
I set a personal best in # of fish landed there in a day, however they were small. All coastal cutts.

Ive had a run in with a bear flyfishing in Idaho 2miles west of yellowstone park. Mine was on a river with some nice fish in my kreel. I made my way to the shore with the bear not far behind tossed my kreel got behind the bushes and booked it. Not fun. Thanks for sharing. Im sure you were making enough noise but I bet the cubs were interested in what you were and brought mom in close. Glad all turned out okay.

Running into black bears can be a bit unnerving, but generally they won't bother you even if they have cubs. I had a run in while brook trout fishing a few years back in Michigan. I scared up a deer and thought I heard her coming back so I made a fawn bleat to try to get her to come in closer. Turns out it was a bear and when I made the fawn bleat he thought I was lunch. He ended up no more than 5 yards away and we both turned inside out trying to get away from one another.
