MarDon Resort FRESH NEWS Fishing Report 7/19/11

By: Nick Barr

It is amazing to see how a lake transforms in a week’s time. As the water level in Potholes Reservoir continues to drop, the fishing just keeps getting better and better. A variety of species and areas are starting to come alive again after their post-spawn doldrums. The water level sits at 1039 feet above sea level right now. This past week the water has dropped at a slower rate due to the cooler weather the area has been experiencing. The Walleye fishing has been consistently great throughout this whole summer. The fish are beginning to make their trek to the main lake and you can catch them in openings of Crab Creek, Winchester Wasteway, and even out off of Goose Island. The preferred depth has been 7-20 feet trolling nightcrawler harnesses. Although the famed Rapala Shad Rap bite for the walleye is starting to heat up with multiple reports of big walleye being caught. While walleye fishing many people have been getting hammered by 3 plus pound Rainbow Trout, so hold on to your rods, those big Rainbows are heating up!

As for bass fishing, those Largemouth and Smallmouth are starting to put on the feed bag again after their post-spawn recuperation. This past weekend’s American Bass Anglers (ABA) tournament was won by MarDon Resort’s own Levi Meseberg with 23lbs. of Largemouth Bass for five fish. Levi reported that all of his fish were fairly fat & healthy, meaning those Largemouth are starting to feed heavily once again. The best way to target them is back in the dunes with a Yamamoto Senko. With the bass fishing on fire, the Crappie and Bluegill are beginning to come out of the deep cover and available to anglers off the main channels in the Sand Dunes. The Smallmouth in Lind Coulee are beginning to pick up again as the water slowly drops and the coulee becomes more of a creek than a lake arm, a drop shot rig with a small Sniper Snub has been working great.
