The kids have been bugging me to learn how to fish and I had a tough time teaching them since I never learned to fish myself from my father. After a bunch of online research, you tube videos (these help a lot so to those of you making them, keep on making 'em), and asking every angler I knew all kinds of questions, the kids and I hit the lake.
Their grandparents had bought them all the Reel 2 Fish combos and we used those setup for bottom fishing and used Powerbait's trout dough. Both of my kids had fish on in the first 20 minutes but neither one landed it. My daughter's fish managed to unhook itself and my son's fish broke the 4lb test leader.
I caught one using the old Daiwa light action my mother used to use when she fished the Columbia River and other watering holes near the Tri-cities. It was a beautiful rainbow with nice color and about 11" in length. The kids were ecstatic. I also caught another one a little later and let each of the kids have a go at reeling him in. He was a 13" one.
We all had a great time and look forward to learning how to fish together. I want to thank all you anglers out there that put up with my questions and helped me develop enough basic skills to show the sport and pastime to my children!
