Got to fish with bassin' buddy Bob Johansen today on American lake. We hit the lake at 0600 and ran to the north end near the boat launch up there and started fishing. Conditions were initally a bit breezy making boat control not as good as I would have liked. The structure and variety of methods available on this end of the lake made me feel like a kid in a candy store. I was tossing jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, dropshots, and rapalas. What fun. The fishing was only so-so. Lot's of little rock bass. I bet if a guy went out with his 10 year old and a small micro jig/plastic tail under a bobber they could catch a hundred of these fish easily. No great size to them but man are they aggresive.
The smallmouth were all in the dink category except for one I caught which may have pushed two pounds if I was generous. Anyway, for us all SMB were caught on either crankbaits or rapalas. I know a previous report mentioned dropshots but for whatever reason I had no success. I targeted ends of docks, 15-25 ft deep. The cranked fish were generally coming up from weedbeds in 12-16 ft of water. Water temp 69, partly sunny, breezy to start, calmed down mid-morning, came back afternoon.
Oh, Little American we fished in the afternoon, no luck. Well, a couple rock bass but that was it.
