Hit the lake around 7 am. Started by throwing a chartreuse spinnerbait towards the lilypads and had a take on the second cast! Lost it by the boat unfortunately, prolly 1.5 lbs or so. Continued on throwing spinnerbaits, jigs, and a frog with no luck. Switched to a zara spook and missed one a few casts in. That got me excited for more topwater so we continued on. Suddenly a nice lookin pig broke surface, completely exiting the water after my spook and missed (prolly 3 lbs)! I cast back to the same spot and he missed again (or I pulled too soon). Either way I did miss the big one of the day. Luckily several yards later I hooked and landed this guy on the spook. All in all a good day, great to see the topwater action has arrived for me! We saw a lot of fry hugging floating logs and by one group of them a bass kept surfacing. Not sure if he was protecting the fry, or fillin' up on some easy breakfast, either way he wanted nothing to do with what we threw at him. By the look of the whirlpool he kept creating he looked sizable. Anyhoo, tight lines all! Ocktane out!
I had a couple topwater hits today on a crankbait before I drug it under, but they were baby fish and didn't get hooked. One came after it again on a followup cast, but grabbed it after the crankbait went dove.
I have a quick question for the big bass fishermen around here. I've never seen anything outfish a worm and bobber for bass, ever. When I go out bass fishing with my friends, they start tossing out their crank baits, senkos, spinners, and whatever artificial lure they can find, and I just sit back and slay them with worm and bobber. Do people not use worm and bobber as a pride thing, or is there some other reason?
A worm and bobber might work for a little while. How much action color and sound does a bobber and worm have? On the heavily pressured lakes you need to be creative also. Not much you can do with a worm and bobber. I`m not saying a guy can`t catch fish on that set up but I`d bet the bank on artificial and hard baits any day.
As for the worm and cork; fish on dude! Most of us bass guys like to know we can fool the pigs with a piece of plastic, wood, and shinny things.
