I started off wanting to catch some perch on a fly rod i have had for about the past 15 years and have never used. After not catching anything for about ten minutes i broke out old reliabe and put the fly rod away. Tipping a white 1/16 oz "Dons Dandy Crappie Jig" with 1/2 inch of worm under a float with a 3 ft leader i got the skunk out of the boat. And continued to catch some small perch and a few nice trout. i spotted a small channel along the bank and flipped my rig up in there and without hesitation my float was hauled under with authority. The largemouth tried everything he could, but it was no match for my 2lb diameter 10lb test braid line that would not break off in the lillies. When he finally decided to come out into the open i was ready with the landing net and the battle was over, a quick picture and back he went. I quickly had a fresh jig tied up and was back in the water. For the rest of the day all i caught was a nice fat blue gill that looked like she was about ready to burst with eggs and a few more trout. No Crappie and no keeper perch. Colors used were solid white and white and pink, both caught fish. I hope more people practice catch and release with these hogs that way we can keep up the breeding population and have a better long term fishery.
Heya A, nice job! I like the inverse bend on that hook, you do that or did the fish??? That bend just might get more hookups as the jig tends to droop tailwise... Got me a thinking. Have a maggot farm going, couple more days and they will be ready. Give me a call. BMGW
Hey BMGW, The fish did that to the jig! I was thinking about trying a few different bends on the jigs to see if it improves the number of hook ups, i was thinking maybe a little bit of a side ways bend might be effective kind of like what is on a circle hook used for salmon fishing. I am getting ready to head out to lake Ozette tomorrow and will let you know how i do. I am planning on spending a night or two, and will be fishing 90 percent of the time i am there. I will be going after Perch and Bass mainly, but of course i will have to put the hurt on the sqawfish population. None will be released alive. I may also sink a few crayfish traps, i hear they are in there.
