After Killing the Fish at pass lake with Akochman last week, i couldnt resist going back. He was busy this week, so i went tuesday and wednesday alone. Either the people there dont realize how easy it can be, or simply dont find it fun to fish the technique we have been doing, nobody is trolling wooley buggers! They all either sit with a chironomid or they troll sinking line with a dark bug. Trust me, if its sunny, use floating line and troll a green wooley bugger as far back as you can go, and troll FAST, much faster than u think for a fly. If its cloudy, use a white wooley bugger. Right on the surface, WAM! landed 12 for 18 takes tuesday, and 6 for 12 takes wednesday after school. Biggest rainbow went 21 inches, smallest was 15.5 inches!! no browns tho. Talked to countless people who didnt have more that 2 fish, most skunked. Dont overthink it, troll a wooley bugger in the surface, IT KILLS.

P.S. If your trolling fast like me, secure your fishing rod! there were so many biting that i decided not to lock the holder for once, and let out a bunch of line so the fish wouldnt spook. a 18 inch rainbow hit so hard that 10 feet of line stripped off the reel before i could let down the oars, and RIPPED the rod into the water and began skating it along the surface. I chased it down and got him, thank god fly rods float with floating line!!! Good luck.

When the chironomid fishing at Pass is on, a dozen fish would be consider a slow day. To each his own.......

Just another trick in the arsenal bag. As long has folks are having fun, the technique they are using really doesn't matter.
Thanks for the reports!

Chironomid/bobber fishing has to be the slowest fishing in the world. To each his own. At least either trolling or casting keeps your brain alive for another day. Sorry to all of those who like the Chironomid fishing. You can catch a lot of fish that way as long as you take a book along.

Chrony fishing catches more fish than trolling, way more. Chronies are the #1 food source in a lake.

I agree Caveman.
People that don't like chironomid fishing generally don't know how to fish them, have had limited success doing so. I have friends who always need to be doing something, trolling, casting etc. It does take some time to learn how to be effect fishing them and isn't for everyone. Like I said before it is something everyone should have in their stillwater arsenal. When the stripped or trolled bugger isn't getting it done, you'll have another option.
Since chironomids make up 50% or more of a trouts spring diet, it seems folks would want to at least try to "match the hatch" on occasion. Maybe not.........
When it is on, you won't get through the first page of your book before the indicator goes down. Your brain will get plenty of work playing and netting fish.
