After leaving Lake Wooten, I decided to fish near by Haven Lake. As I was launching, another bass angler was just quitting. Said he seen bass but they wouldn't bite. I decided I would try the shallow, weedy cove. I came to a dock with a lady and her dog enjoying the sun. I asked if she had seen any bass. She said, "yes, there are some big ones under my dock right now." Then she asks, "Are you a good bass fisherman." "Yes, pretty good," I admitted. I cast a Rapala up to the shoreline end of the dock. "They are looking at your lure," she said. At first I could not see any bass but then, just behind my lure were 4 nice bass that I thought were all between 3 1/2 and 6 pounds. They glared arrogantly at me and swam back under the dock. I probably didn't impress the lady very much with my angling expertese. Again, no fish but a nice, long day on the water on a warm sunny day.
As I was leaving, a man pulled into the access area and went down to the exit stream with a net. I had to know what he was doing so I went over and asked. He was checking on a trap for coho salmon leaving the lake. He said both Wooten and Haven have coho and his job was to trap them, count them, weigh them and release them into the stream. He also said that sometimes he catches a lot of small bass in the trap. I asked what he did with them and he said he tosses them up on the band for the birds to eat. He also said that he sometimes finds a sunfish -- I had no idea there were sunfish in the lake. I'll get Mike to update the overview.
