I was told about Caliche from a friend of mine, and after returning from a business trip in Everett, I was passing it and decided to stop.
I got to the water and tossed what I had on the line already; a bright yellow 1/16 oz rooster tail. I watched lots of little rainbows chasing, some making attempts at strikes, but nothing.
I walked down the bank a little, and was mobbed by swarms of mosquitos and gnats so bad it sounded like the lake was humming. I went back to the launch, tried a few more times, then back to the car to change to a chartreuse grubhead / grub. I tossed it a few times, brought in half the milfoil in the pond, and went back for another lure.
I settled on a 1/8 oz rooster tail light, black with UV blade, and went back to the pond. Fed up with the launch not producing, I decided to brave the swarms and see if they thinned further down. They didnt, but every time a stiff breeze came along, they dissapeared, so I stuck around. The I started getting hits, then full strikes, then BAM, one down, great little 10" rainbow. I tried casting the next one 45 degrees out into the pond and nothing. The same with toward the launch. There was one spot that if I hit it, I was at least getting bit, if not reeling one in. If I was off by 20 degrees in either direction, nothing.
I CARed everything, not having the right facilities to clean or store fish, and ended the hour stint with 4 landed (none under 10") and 4 jump and spits. Great day, will be going back soon with bug repellent and a jacket.
Tight lines!
