I went to Pine Lake for the first time today and started near the NE area to let the wind glide us along the docks. We started drop-shotting pilings. A few minutes into the day I noticed a nice gravelly gap between the docks and tossed a rat l trap about a foot from shore. I felt a little action instantly and thought I had thrown it against a stick. Nope, fish on! Tiny, tiny smallmouth. Five minutes later in a similar area I send my massive rat l trap toward the shore and again I hook up with a smallmouth about as big as the bait. Both fish hooked in a foot or less of water.

You could see about 10 feet deep ... we fished mostly soft-muddy areas and I could not find rocks all along the northern side of the lake. I noticed the weeds barely starting to come up and a few lillies had broken the surface in random areas.

We found nothing for the next two hours. Any smallmouth tips on this lake? Had a great time - beautiful day.

Did you try spinners? Roostertails and Mepps are pretty effective at finding spring smallmouth. Jigs are the of course lures, usually with plastic or real worm trailers, fished slow. I use these on new lakes or streams with good results. Good luck.

Cool, I'll try throwing on a roostertail next time, I'd try jigs, but I always do better on drop-shot.

The few times I've been to Pine we had luck with SMB jigging from the docks with soft plastics..
