I HAD THE BEST DAY OF BASS FISHING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE TODAY!! But it was also the most devasting and depressing day as well..
It was nice out today so I decided to hit Log Boom Park on my way home from work today. Unfortunately, I only had one Rod / Reel Combo in my car that I left in there on accident and my tackle bag with misc goodies in it. I got to the lake around 7:00 and within 2 casts I caught a 2 lb 9 oz Largemouth Bass!
3 casts later, as I'm talking to a man and his daughter, I let my lure sink and as I reeled up the slack, I felt my line moving and I set the hook hard, BEAST ON!! When I set the hook it felt like a snag that shook and my rod stopped in place. This bass is ripping out drag like no other and I'm freaking out with my adrenaline raging through my veins. I pulled it out from under the dock and it's an Absolute HAWG!! My guess is a conservative 6 lbs, keyword conservative!! I could have easily shoved my fist down its throat and I have big hands. I started to panic because I only had 8 lb fluorocarbon on my rod and didn't want to risk lifting it up the dock. Instead of grabbing the line above my reel and flipping it up, I was an ABSOLUTE IDIOT and grabbed the line at the end of my rod tip,. When I got the fish about a foot away from the dock it shook hard and snapped my line.
My Heart SANK, My Adrenaline Immediately Disappeared, and honestly, I almost cried.. Biggest Bass of my life, that could have even potentially pushed 7 lbs, which gave me the fight of a lifetime, slipped away.
I'm never making the mistake of lifting a big bass by the line again.
The rest of the day was amazing though. I don't want to drag this report on any longer so here are the cold hard facts.
Total Largemouth Caught Today: 15.
1 lb 3 oz 1 lb 3 oz 1 lb 4 oz 1 lb 5 oz 1 lb 5 oz 1 lb 7 oz 1 lb 8 oz
2 lb 0 oz 2 lb 1 oz 2 lb 2 oz 2 lb 3 oz 2 lb 4 oz 2 lb 8 oz 2 lb 10 oz 2 lb 12 oz
The first picture is the first Largemouth I caught which was a 2 lb 9 oz. The second picture is the 2 lb 10oz and 2 lb 12 oz. 2lb 6 oz 2 lb 1 lb
I can attest to that! You were on fire today! Five fish in the half hour or so that I was there. It's was great meeting you, I enjoy reading your reports.
I'll never forget when I was a lot younger, the first time I hooked my first 7 pounder (previous best was a 4 pound large) and I accidentally set my drag too tight, then snap! Sucks man. Keep at it. That's crazy such a big bass was so shallow. I wonder if there moving into spawning position already.
@ the quadfather - we got to go there so i can change your mind about log boom! @ natetreat - hey man it was nice meeting you too, thanks! @dresscode5 - thanks man, no need to apologize, i'm not sure if they're moving into spawning position quite yet but the warmer water brought them up shallower! @ lord of the fly - i didn't get to get my hands on it and weigh it, so i am still considering this the biggest loss of my life in terms of fishing.. i'm starting to wonder if i'll ever hook up with another beast that big again..
i liked the rod / reel combo i was using today but it was my smallmouth / dropshot rod that i had set up with 8 lb fluorocarbon, i just ripped out some line and added 50 lb power bro braid to it. not letting another one escape again from a line snap!
ugh.. i just noticed a huge typo at the bottom of my report.. when i was listing the weights i knew i made some errors and tried to delete them but forgot to.. -____-
That is a job well done! I have only caught 15 fish in one day once. Hats off for doing that, and from the shore! Sorry to hear about that loss. But at least you know she lives in there and you'll be up to it for round #2. I am not sure how to get there but I'm awfully tempted to drive to Log Boom from Fed Way just to check it out.
You improved your wisdom, equipment, area knowledge, and insight (I'll never do THAT again!). You have stuck with it long enough to fool one of the grand ladies. You will very likely do it again, and land one. I lost my first 500 lb world record (Well, it felt like it at the time!) close to 45 years ago. Haven't missed a year since (Funny though, they weigh less than 500). Get a good net. Really important when dock fishing. I like lipping Bass, and swinging two pounders up, but you get the big ones, and a net properly used increases successfull landings probably 5 to one. It reduces the adrenaline just a hair, but also reduces the disappointment a lot.
I love log boom! Last year I watched a Russian guy catch the largest Pumpkinseed I have ever seen. I think it could have been a state record. All the guy said was "dinner!"
@ islandbass - it's in kenmore, just off of bothell way and 61st ave ne. in late spring early summer the bite is pretty hot. i've never fished there this early in the year but i will be from now one :). @ fishinchristian - thanks, i hope so. the dock are log boom park is a good 2-3 feet off of the water and the main part of the dock has a guard rail that is another 3 feet higher or so. i would need a pretty long net to be able to use it effectively there :P @ fatbuds421 - i have caught some decent pumpkinseed and bluegills there but never any giants yet :D
@ aaidian - it definitely was a much needed way to end a stressful day of work! @ knutsen1122 - i'd like to tell you but i never get the chance to fish wa in the mornings cause of work.. @ aaronw - it's got to be this prespawn feeding frenzy cause i hardly ever broke the 2 lb mark at log boom last year! it was mostly in the 1.5 - under 2 lb range.
@ eddieg1 - thanks man! it's been a very slow start this year due to the weather, you'll be on them in no time! @ fishingboy - i tried new technique and lures that paid off for me yesterday that i didn't try last year when i met you if that's what you were refering to. @ fishingmachine - thanks bro! i'm still mad at myself for not flipping it onto the dock, i should have actually walked it all the way to the end where the smaller docks are where i could have lipped it. @ kzoo - yeah it was a huge disappointment but the rest of the day was awesome :)
@ the hawg hunter - i have poles rigged up with braided line, i just didn't have all my poles with me when i stopped by on the way home from work. i wasn't planning on fishing that day and had to make do with what i had :P
Yeah, I went after panfish. The fishing along the dock for bass was diffucult due to the weather conditions.
