Arrived at WDFW boat launch around 10:00 a.m. First thing, my partner rigged up an egg siker set up(18" leader) with orange, chartruese, and white power eggs and hooked into a fat 14" rainbow about 30 to 40 yards out. Gun metal gray, heavily scaled, and fought like an old boot compared to it's size. And though he received a number of bites in the short period before noon, they failed to produce hook ups due to angler error and not to finicky fish. (tight line- fish felt the weight and spit the hook) As the boats came in for the day, fish counts were low to non-existent with most of the activity occurring in the north to north eastern portion of the lake.
I on the other hand, landed six fish and a million other near hook ups throughout the the day. Upon my arrival I noticed surface activity in the slough adjacent to the boat ramp. With worm and bobber I landed 3 fish, the smallest was about 9" and the largest was about 12". I released them all. Water clarity was 100% which allowed me to lip hook the fish every time. These fish, though somewhat smaller than those in the main body, fought like errant missiles with arial displays known only to the summer steelheaders. (I hooked the other three on a variety of small lures by the way). Will be returning tomorrow with fly rod. DRY FLY action in January!!!
