Bottom Fishing From Boat

I rented a canoe in the Arboretum again and let the wind blow me way out. I fished for 2 hours and was paddeling back when I realized I was getting sunburnt. I stoped to cast every minute or so. Just when a bunch of huge boats were passing me I felt her hit. The wake from the boats nearly flipped my canoe as I was fighting the fish so it was hard to gauge how big the fish was. I landed her and couldn't believe my eyes. My personal best smallie!! Caught her on a rainbow trout crankbait (I don't know what brand, it's made in Japan). I need to buy a dang scale!!! I'm guessing she was 5 pounds, 5 ounces??? What would you guys guess? She was heavy for sure. Big belly, huge mouth and head. That was the only fish of the day but it was well worth the $15 for the canoe. Beautiful day. Oh, the stickle backs and baby trout are hanging out in 1 foot of water. I always get excited to see baitfish shallow, you all know what that means. The water temp was 51 degrees and I hooked the fish in 15 feet. Tight lines

Nice Bass! I wouldn't doubt it being 5lbs. I went out today and got a short fish, just not my day.

4-4.5lbs, great fish. I caught 2 smallies last week that I swore were over 4.5 lbs, they were both just under 4 when weighed. Then I saw a 5lber caught, there is no doubting a 5 when you see one. Great fish aren't measured in weight though, they're measured in the experience.

It's not really worth debating but I compared this photo to all my 5 pound large mouth photo's (that I had a good scale for) and this smallie looks very comparable. Also I'm 6'4'', 220ibs so fish never looks as big next to me as they do next to many of my friends I fish with. However, I looked as photo's of smallies over 6 ponds in bassmaster and they dwarf my fish. Also I pretty sure half the bass in those photo's don't weigh what they say and I know for a fact 80% + of the fish were caught on wild shiners and another 10% of the bass were on a bed. Down south that's a cheat. We called them minnow dunkers. ha. This is way too long of a reply. Either way, thanks for the positive remarks gents!

It was somewhere around 500 yards due north of the last chunk of the island. The water was at least deep enough for my 12 diving crankbait to stop getting covered in weeds every cast. Though the boats were tearing up the water so there was still weeds on every cast just
about.

Your size could change how big the smallie looks for sure. Hey man, you were there I wasn't, it sounds like you have caught some big bass in the past so I'll take your word for it. Great fish no matter what the weight is.

Seriously nice fish! Must have been a hell of fight in a little boat. There's so much boat traffic through the cut, it was a tough go from shore. Could you send me a pic of some of the crankbait you like? So far, none of mine have caught anything, so i'm sort of limited to plastics. I just need help picking something that works around here, size shape etc.

wow, congrats on catching that hawg of a smallie! my guess would be 4 - 5 lbs or so but the actual weight isn't too important. what's important is that you caught your personal best and that is always an amazing feeling and accomplishment!

Capris... f^&$ no, haha. I was trying to get a little sun before I head to Mexcio for my wedding in 3 weeks and I didn't anticipate it getting so warm out. Pika206: I tend to pick crankbaits depending on how realistic they look. Print off a picture or 2 of baitfish like bluegill, young trout and try to match them when you scroll the bassproshop.com or where ever you prefer. Get them with various shaped and length bills. I highly recommend the Strike King sexy shad lipless. You can fish it anywhere and the paint it really thick so you can smash it into cover and there cheap.
