I arrived here a little late More or less just scouting. Surprised to see people there when i arrived. It was 38 degrees and raining(2pm). So i walked out on the ice and found some holes to try. I have never iced fished before nor do i know what i am doing so i wasn't excepting much until someone came up next to me and pulled out 2 fatties. After getting soaked for a little longer i left to go home and try to figure out how to do this. The road is not to bad with good tires and 4x4 but if it freezes it will be bad. If anyone has some advise for me it would be much appreciated . I plan on going again Saturday morning hopefully i can put something together by then.

i have had some success on this lake by suspending a couple of salmon eggs a foot or so off teh bottom (put a splitshot about a foot above your snelled hook with eggs on, and also put a marshmallow on it to get it to float off the bottom. also caught fishing jigging a "swedish pimple". on the upstroke it pulls straight up, but on the way down it flutters.

always a good idea to check for recent reports for the lake before you head out. fish are fickle, they seem to change their appetite daily, and mid-day even, so see what's been working for others and when. i've been looking at reports because i'm headed out sunday, and it sounds like salmon eggs are the way to go at the moment.

good luck!!

I almost saw you out there this A.M. but at the last minute decided to keep it close and went to Silver instead. Trout Cowboy is dead on. You don't have to have a jig, just simply suspending a couple salmon eggs on a size 10 or 12 hook will work. The closest holes to the launch, about 125-150 yards onto the ice, are holes I used for three consecutive days. I did real well. Lots of other holes as you continue out. All of these holes in this area can be productive, I saw guys getting fish out there. Water in this area is only 5-7 feet deep and landing fish is simple. Just suspend those eggs about 5 feet down under a small float. Make sure you're not on the bottom, if you can feel the weeds crank her up a foot. Trout will come up to your offering. Good luck! P.S. Go to a lighter line, 4-6 lb. Less memory, easy to manage, and more than enough for Hog rainbows.

I like, I think they call it, drop shotting. I put my sinker on the bottom of the leader and tie in hooks above that. I'm certain I don't do as well as the guys with a vexilar and a single hook/jig but I'm tying in 3 single hooks about 2 feet apart with the sinker about 6" under the bottom hook, so I'm covering 6' of water with my leader/spread. Fish seem to like it at whatever depth I'm at. Yeah, if I had an extra $400-500 burnin a hole in my pocket, I'd love to buy a vexilar. Go small! Jigs, hooks, line! Piece of a worm rather than whole. Just have some fun experimenting! Oh! Pautskiez ball of fire, green label beats all other eggs hands down!

Mark has a good point. When I first took my boys ice fishing, I tied a simple, user friendly rig. About 18-20" up the line, I tied in a snelled size 12 salmon egg hook with a couple overhand knots. Then I tied a 1/4 oz casting sinker at the bottom. I had them drop it in until the sinker hit bottom, then take in the slack. They caught several fish. So easy, a caveman (me!) could do it!
