Couldn't get myself out of a warm bed this morning, so I finally hit Eloika 1200-1615. Hiked all the way almost to Jerry's Landing from the public launch. Found the deeper water, but no fish for me. Must be my lack of maggots - fishing shrimp and Berkley "fake" maggots. I just can't find the fish; Could be there's just a morning bite, or I'm jigging the wrong sorta stuff. Caught 3 dink perch and 1 of those pickerels (grass pike) ya'll have been talking about. That was the most exciting hit as it came on my first time fishing a Rapala jigging rap. Then sadly said rap was lost to the weeds. Made an otherwise crappy outing even crappier.

One fisherman on the ice when I arrived and one when I left. First one had three bass. Second one had a bass and a few decent-sized perch.

Unless I'm desperate for ice, I think I'm gonna cross Eloika off my ice fishing list. Gonna wait on Silver to ice up, or maybe hit Fourth of July or Sprague.

Ice is still 5-8" in most places; 1 inch of slush, 2-3 inches opaque ice, 2-3 inches clear ice.

JK, did you keep that pike? I would like to know how they eat. They look a lot like the Northern Pike from your photo. Any ways good job scouting. Newman is open to fish isn't it??

Well JK.. I'm almost on break for the holidays and I will be up there almost everyday looking to fill the freezer. If you are going to try and give it another shot someday, I can show you the ropes on this lake =) I will be targeting crappies and perch mostly, maybe some bass for fun.

@ BMGW - I DID keep that pickerel, especially since it cost me a nice lure that day. I've never eaten one; Thought I'd give it a try despite the y-bones and all. @ bazzdude - I'll measure it and let you know; Looks like they top out at 16" though. @ aaron42ash - Thanks for the offer; I might take you up on that if I get some time off. Hopefully my sled'll come in the mail; It'll make the trek all across the lake a little less painful.

Thanks for the report. Didn't realize the ice is still that size. Does the Pickerel have teeth like a pike?
