FINALLY, a day to fish!! Been a crazy crazy month or so, but I was able to hit Goodwin with my 19 year old son Jacob today! Launched at about 8am (teenagers lol) and ran north to the point that extends out in front of the R.V. park. Fishing the west shore just north of the point I hooked and lost two fish on the first two casts of the day using a green Yamamoto grub on a 3/8oz jighead. One was definately a dink and one felt about 2lbs?. A quick hook change and we continued fishing the west side moving back south. I was alternating between the grub and a crawfish colored crankbait, my son was alternating between a chart/wht spinnerbait, a grub and a minnow colored crankbait.
My first landed fish came on the crankbait, banging it off of shallow rocks, it's the smaller one in the pics. Got to the area I call the "goal posts" and caught a dink, then another, my son missed one. Worked the area for a bit longer all the way down to the small cove and decided to move. The sun was getting up pretty good, and I wanted to run n.e. and hit some shady spots while there were still some to hit. This produced only two more dinks, so we fired up and ran back s.w. to an area across from the launch I call "the bowl". Unfortunately there was a boat anchored right over the spot I wanted to fish, so I had to fish a little deeper and west of where I wanted, but I did hook and lose a good one on a texas-rigged power worm.
We left the area as we were running out of time, made a quick stop by the rocky point due north of the County Park, nada. So, for a last hurrah, I ran us back to the goal posts for a few more casts. By this time it was pushing noon, water temps were 74* and we were marking alot of fish in the 8-10' range and no noticeable thermocline...
First cast at the goal posts, and I caught the 3.2lb smallie in the pic, second cast caught a dink, the kid missed one and about three casts later I hooked a toad!!!!! Unfortunately, the day would end as it began, and she came unhooked. Bummer, I checked my hook and it was plenty sharp, I may have being a bit too easy on the 8lb test combined with a little rust from the month or so I missed, but hey, pretty day, caught some fish, and got the young man out on the water, can't beat that!
