My son James and I hiked into Goat lake for an overnight trip. Spent the afternoon fishing primarily the far end of the lake and had good success on the eastern brook trout. The lure of choice were Fish Creek Spinners. I tried wooley buggers but not much interest - the spinners on the other hand were pretty consistant. Best method was to cast out and do a 10-15 second countdown and start retrieving. Had several fish hit the spinners on the free-fall, which was cool. Scrappy fighters in the 7-10 inch range. Best location was off a big rock by the waterfalls at the south end of the lake. The spots closer to the camping area were not producing at all. Again, this lake would produce like crazy for someone willing to hike in a tube!

Again, Mike... you are completly going through my list of hiking lakes this summer. I was hiking around the Sauk river, and standing at the Goat lake trail head just yesterday.
Can you confirm that the trail in does go along quite a bit of an old wagon road? and then is it the last mile or two that become typical switch back hiking trail? Is this a lake that you could even Mt. Bike into because of the wagon/logging road? Maybe not.....?

Quadfather - we should talk! I need to Blog this one, just a bit tired today. There are two trails. Lower Elliot Creek is a traditional hiking trail that follows the creek and is a very nice, scenic route. We went up that way. We came down the upper Elliot trail. It's an old logging road and as such was very level and frankly - boring, although on a clear day has some nice views. It is a quick route home but a bit farther than the lower trail. Both trails reconnect about one mile from the lake and then do switchbacks of around 650 ft of the 1100 or so feet of total elevation gain for the hike. Neither trail allows mountain bikes. Funny we missed each other by "this much". BTW, I came across your posts on another forum regarding pack rafts - thinking of getting one.
