Well, the Lake Quinault Derby was held today, although the area had recieved 3 inches of rain in 3 days the derby day was predicted to be dry and sunny. The rain had turned the hot fishing of last weekend to lukewarm today, but we still managed to catch the biggest fish of the derby, just not the big prize winner. Not many people manage to catch Dolly Varden char at this lake, the big numbers are in the cut-throat trout and they are generally not hard to catch but size for the resident cuts in the lake is small, but sea-runs are a little bigger in the fall. The largest Dolly(mine) was 3.98 lbs, next was only 13 inches.Mine was worth $100 , the largest cut was only 16-5/8 inches, worth $1000! There were only 4 Dollies entered and prob. 50 0r more cuts entered, so you can see why it's done that way. It's held by the Lion's club in cooperation with the Quinault tribe, a nice annual event. A lot of happy kids, I'm esp. happy as my wife Melanie won the Dolly prize 3 years ago, derby wasn't held year before last so we've got the Dolly prize two out of the last three derbies! It's something we'ed like to keep in the family! Bob R.
